About Us
In 1925, Maurice and Sara Klein opened a small general store on Main Street in the rural village of Fallston, Maryland. The family continued to serve the rural community of Fallston with every sort of grocery and farm supply from this spot for nearly 30 years.
In 1949, their only son, Ralph, after having served in the military in WWII,
completed and received his bachelors degree in business administration from the University of Maryland (College Park). Following college, Ralph and Maurice purchased a large, brick general store from the E. Tucker Trading Company in Forest Hill, and commenced business as "Maurice Klein and Son." The company motto--- "100,001 things under one roof"---was taken literally. "Klein's" featured everything one could imagine, from fresh meats and vegetables, to canning supplies, hardware, feed supplies, fertilizers - even cast iron stoves and linoleum floors! Father, son, and their wives (Sara and Shirley) remained together in business until Maurice's passing in 1972.
In 1979, Ralph, Shirley and their sons, Andy and Mike, relocated "Klein's" from the old village crossroads in Forest Hill to a new, modern supermarket at 2101 Rockspring Road. Five other Harford County locations (and another son- Howard) joined Klein's Family Markets (Klein's) over the next 25 years. In late 2005, Klein’s opened a 7th store in Jacksonville (Baltimore County), Maryland.
And now a fourth generation, Marshall and Sarah, has joined the Company to continue its commitment to quality, service and value.
Today, as in 1925, Klein's Family Markets remains unconditionally committed to excellence in customer service. All associates understand and adhere to Klein's Sterling Service Principles. Customers (and their purchases!) can expect to be treated with courtesy and care in every department, and at every stop along your shopping path. Because of our unflagging commitment to fair employment practices, continuing education and workplace training, each and every associate endeavors to make you feel welcome and "at home" each and every time you visit us.
Our stores are clean, filled with the best quality and variety of products, and the freshest perishables from around the world. Boars Head Deli Meats, Certified Angus Beef, Organic Amish-Brand Chicken, Easy-Peel Texas Gulf Shrimp, Oven Fresh Crusty Breads, and the freshest local and national brand produce are among the many "signature features" you will find at Klein's.
At Klein's, "You Don't Have to Pay More, to Get More!" Each and every week, we feature more than 200 items "on sale", and 2,000 more fluorescent green "K.L.P." (Klein's Low Price) stickers alert our customers to even more special values. Generations of loyal Klein's shoppers know that our products are priced at values "second to none."
"Sense of community" is a core value at Klein's Family Markets. We support local education through the Ralph and Shirley Klein Foundation School Grant, a $40,000 annual grant administered through the Board of Education. The Board receives funding requests from each of the area's 51 principals, which are then reviewed and approved on a "merit" basis. (For more information about this program, contact Don Morrison, Director of Public Information, Harford County Public Schools, 410-838-7300, http://www.hcps.org). Or see "46 Schools share 2003-04 Klein's $40,000 Grants," Harford Schools newsletter, Vol. 36, No. 10, page 10 (June, 2004).
In addition to the school grant program, Klein's Family Markets and the Ralph and Shirley Klein Foundation provide direct support to not-for-profit organizations throughout Harford and Northern Baltimore County. Last year, we provided $300,000 in direct support to community-based organizations. (A complete list of donation recipients for 2006 is posted at each of our stores.) Requests for support must be submitted on "Request for Support" forms, which are available at any of our Customer Service Counters.
We know that once you visit our stores, you'll know why generations of loyal customers in Northern Maryland continue to shop at Klein's Family Markets. If you would like to share your shopping experiences or any other thoughts with us, please contact us through our website (www.kleinsonline.com), or write us at 2011 Klein Plaza Drive, Suite 2B, Forest Hill, Maryland 21050. Postage prepaid "Customer Comment Cards" are available at every register, or any Customer Service office.
